What My Working Life as a Designer Entails!!!

This Post is about My Job description as Often I am asked by people what exactly does my role as a Fashion designer entail: To start of with the average person 'Thinks' or 'Feels' I only make Fashion Products I.e Coats, Jackets, Jeans, Handbags Etc... Less then 30% of job involves "Sewing or Making" - So what exactly am I doing for the remaining 70% - A large segment of my time is spent on "Research & Design Development inline with The design brief" this involves going through 100's of fashion based websites and magazines.

Secondly - "Design Illustration" drawing up designs that have been produced in my mind throughout the research period.

Thirdly - Travelling throughout the country in search for Fabrics that are compatible with my design Idea's, this is one of the most challenging part of my creative role.

Fourthly
- Developing Pattern blocks is the most technical part of my design process, for those whom don't know what this is: In basic terms it's the Blue print of a Garment or product Construction where measurements have to be accurate down to the millimeter. A comprehensive study of the Human figure (Anatomy) is a must to understand, "it's all about the body shape and proportion".

Finally - it comes to what everyone thinks I "only" do Sewing. The Fashion Process is something I really admire simply because Creativity is Freedom and I never really find my work Hard, In-fact I always say, I am not a hard worker because I like doing what I do.

Between these I have missed out several processes because I wanted to keep this article fairly short and brief, However this is how my average week is spent.

Thank you for reading this Article based on my work life.

Many Thanks
Nabeel Hussain
